April Meeting Cancelled

The April Photoshop SIG meeting originally scheduled for Thursday the 15th, has been cancelled. This is due to a schedule conflict with the school.

Originally, at the April meeting we would have continued our look at some of the new features of Photoshop 8. In addition, we were scheduled to explore some different ways of converting color images to black-and-white images, and how to get a better image once the conversion has been made. This will still be the topic of the April meeting if it can be rescheduled; if not, we will continue with this program in May.

It is unknown at this time if we will be able to reschedule the April meeting. If so, the new date would be Thursday, April 22 and members would be informed as soon as possible.

Tips and Tricks

Alternate Feathered Selections

When feathering a selection, most of us try to guess how many pixels will give us the nice, soft selection we are looking for in the “feather selection” dialog box. Sometimes we guess right, and other times it is a process of undos and redos. Try this alternate method: Make a selection and then press “Q” to turn on the quick mask mode. Now fade the edge by choosing Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Here you can see how much of a blur you will need to soften the edges as you adjust the Radius amount. When your done, press “Q” to return to standard mode with the selection already made and the right amount of feathering.

Unlocking the Background Layer

If you find yourself unable to move or alter the background layer, it is because since Photoshop 6, Adobe locked the Background layer from movement. The checkbox to “lock movement” may be turned on but it is also grayed out, so you cannot uncheck it to unlock it. The only way around this is to double-click on the Background layer, which brings up the New Layer dialog. Here your Background layer becomes Layer 0 (or any other name you chose to give it besides “Background”) and is unlocked. Now you can move it.

May Meeting

The May meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday May 13th, 2004.
