February 11, 2003

February Meeting Information
The February Photoshop SIG meeting will be held on Thursday, February 13th, from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Voorhees High School in room 245. February’s meeting will focus on the program scheduled for January’s cancelled meeting, which was the establishment of a good digital workflow using Photoshop. We will look at the steps to take starting from a scan, digital photo, or original image, through editing and touch-up, to producing a final digital master. Members who wish to bring in their images for discussion during the question-and-answer session should contact SIG chairman Matt LaRusso prior to the meeting.

Photoshop 7 G4 Update
In late January, Adobe released an update for Photoshop 7 (and Photoshop Elements 2.0). The Adobe Photoshop 7.0.x AltiVecCore Update plug-in was released to improve the reliability of Photoshop 7.0.x when used on G4 processor Macs. The software works in addition to the AltiVecCore plug-in already installed by Photoshop. The update can be accessed from Adobe’s main update page at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads.

Adobe Executive Hints at New Technology
According to Adobe's senior vice president of Digital Imaging and Video Products, Bryan Lamkin, Adobe may announce some new technology at the National Association of Photoshop Professionals' upcoming PhotoshopWorld event. Lamkin recently noted that Adobe "should have some interesting news” to share with attendees, adding that Adobe has been "working hard to fast-track some new technology." Lamkin did not give any further details. PhotoshopWorld Conference and Expo takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, February 19-21, 2003. Stay tuned for details.

JPEG 2000
JPEG 2000 (also known as JP2) is intended to succeed the JPEG file format in widespread use on the web and elsewhere, using new compression techniques to store images in smaller files and with higher quality than is possible with standard JPEG. JPEG 2000 also supports advanced imaging options such as alpha channel transparency, optional lossless compression, and support for 16 bit-per-channel images. Fnord software has released "j2k" the first free JPEG 2000 Photoshop plug-in available for the reading and creation of this new format. It is available for download from http://www.fnordware.com.

Tips and Tricks
Copy and Transform
Pressing Option-Command-Control-T will create a copy of the object you are transforming, leaving the original untouched.

Line Art Scanning
When scanning line art, scan at the final resolution you are going to print at.

Copying a Layer into the Exact Same Spot in a Different Image
If you want to make a copy of a Layer, and have it in the same position in a new document, just Control-click on the Layer in the Layers palette and choose Duplicate Layer. When the dialog comes up, under Destination, select the name of your new image you want to copy the Layer into.
